Opposition MPs are not mollified by Justice Minister Rob Nicholson’s repeated assurances in the Commons Monday that former judge Frank Iacobucci will have access to “all relevant documents” in his review of the files on Afghan detainees. Toronto MP Bob Rae, Liberal foreign affairs critic, said the problem is that the government gets to decide which documents are relevant. The controversy revolves around disclosure of documents that the opposition believes will show that Canadian Forces transferred suspected Taliban detainees to Afghan security forces despite a risk of torture.

Jack Harris, the New Democratic Party defence critic, says it is Parliament, not the government, that should be determining whether it is in “the public interest” to disclose specific confidential documents. Both MPs branded Iacobucci's open-ended assignment to vet documents as a government “stalling tactic.” They each called again for a public inquiry in which a judge could subpoena documents.
Nicholson noted that the documents Iacobucci will vet are those requested by the opposition parties in a motion last fall – plus “relevant” papers from 2001-2005 that would shed light on detainee policy under Liberals who preceded the current Conservative government.

“I have never been in a more stressful game mentally because it takes everything from you, especially when they score a goal like that in the third period.

Toews’ performance was recognized when he was named a tournament all-star, as were Parise and Slovakia’s Pavol Demitra.

For a guy who started this Olympic hockey tournament with his job description undefined and some even questioning his inclusion on Team Canada, Jonathan Toews turned out to be a secret weapon.

“We kept telling each other that somebody in here will be a hero and we have to go back out and fight for that gold medal,” he said.

The way it unfolded was pure Toews: He stripped U.S. defenceman Brian Rafalski of the puck to the left of the American goal, and after Mike Richards took a shot, Toews snapped home the rebound at 12:50 of the first period.

“They could play against anybody and could also create offence. I thought Nash was a threat every time he was on the ice.”

Before the tournament started, Toews was pencilled in as playing somewhere on the fourth line He’s not big, not particularly physical and he’s not a big scorer. All he did was lead the team in scoring (1-7-8) and plus minus (plus-9).

“You’ve just got to find a way to get rid of that sinking feeling and go back on the ice.”

“There’s nothing that compares to this, how big it was and to beat a team as good as the U.S.,” Toews said. “You don’t want this to slip away, it’s an unbelievable feeling. This is a game for the ages.”

Toews’ line, which featured Nash for the third straight game, was terrific at both ends of the ice, but was on late in the third when Canada was back on its heels and Zach Parise scored with 24.4 seconds left and goalie Ryan Miller off for an extra attacker.

“We were fighting there to get the puck out of the zone and it was pretty shocking with 24 seconds left,” said Toews.

On Sunday, he played head to head against the Americans’ top offensive line of Paul Stastny, Zach Parise and Jamie Langenbrunner, but he also scored the all-important first goal for Canada.

The federal government plans to balance the budget in the “medium term” through spending restraint, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Monday as the Conservatives prepared to table their latest spending plans.

“I thought Nash and Toews were are best two forwards tonight,” said Canada coach Mike Babcock.

The Winnipeg native and 21-year-old Chicago Blackhawks captain worked his way up the depth chart as the tournament progressed and, by the time Nash had joined his line, became the sparkplug on the team’s shutdown line.

“With Richards, they were a dominant line for us.

They were clearly Canada’s most effective line since being put together three games ago against Russia.

While superstar Sidney Crosby delivered the winning 3-2 overtime goal in dramatic fashion, it was Toews and his linemates Rick Nash and Mike Richards who provided the glue to get Canada to the gold-medal game.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservatives would coast to an easy victory — but not necessarily a majority — if a federal election were held today.

Toews said that with all the veterans in the dressing room there was no sense of panic.
